The discipline of speed steel was developed in the United States in the year 1981 with the objectives of being a fun competition for shooters which not only provided a serious test of their speed and accuracy but would also be easy to understand for non-shooters and therefore attract a spectator audience. It has developed into a major international attraction in the shooting world with big prize money for the top shooters. All the top manufacturers enter their top shootings into the annual championships.
The Levin Pistol Club caters for Speed Steel at the outdoor range with one of our senior members focused on training other members that are interested in progressing in this discipline.
Speed Steel can be shot in any pistol calibre and uses simple stages (or courses of fire) made up of five steel plates, each of differing size, set at differing distances from the shooter. A beeper is sounded and the shooter must draw and shoot the plates in order. each shooter shoots the stage several times and is scored. The overall winning is the faster shooter.
As with all shooting disciplines there is massive emphasis on safety and much of the required training is focused on being able to compete safely before considering speed and accuracy.
